Moodle 4.4 Upgrade

Edit mode toggle

Like the Boost theme, an edit mode toggle button is now available.

Previously, you would see a "Turn edition on" button on pages like the GradeBook. This has now been removed in favour of a edit mode toggle at the top of the page:

Snap Theme Settings

Snap theme settings have now moved.

You can find them here:
Site Admin > Appearance > Themes

On this page, you can click on the settings cog to access the settings:

1. Ordering Quiz Type

Moodle has included a new question type for quizzes: Ordering.

It displays several items (words, phrases, images or other media) in a random order, which must then be dragged into the correct sequential order.

2. Quiz grade items

Moodle 4.4 now lets you add grade items to specific sections or groups of questions.

A new dropdown box is available within the Quiz questions page:

From a student perspective, they will see the sections as part of their quiz review:

3. Quiz last saved

A new addition to quizzes for students is a visible message to show their answers are being saved by the system for reassurance:

This message will appear after they have started typing a response for response questions in Moodle.

Note this is dependent on the "Auto-save delay" timing you have set for quizzes on the following page: Site Administration > Plugins > Activity Modules > Quiz > General Settings

TinyMCE Default Editor

As of 4.4, Moodle has now made TinyMCE the default editor.
You can revert the change to the ATTO editor by going to:
Site Administration > Plugins > Text Editors > Manage Editors and make ATTO the top of the list.

Note that ATTO will no longer be available when your site is upgraded to Moodle 4.5 in July 2025.

Password visibility toggle

Core Moodle now includes the ability to turn on a password visibility icon for users on the login screen:

To turn this on:
Site Admin > Plugins > Authentication > Manage Authentication

Bulk User Actions improvements

In the Browse list of users, there are new options to manage users

• Filters can be applied by using the filter button on the right-hand side
• Users can now be selected in bulk, and the following actions can be taken:
  • Send a message
  • Delete
  • Force password change
  • Add to cohort
  • reset user authentication factors

NEW Tasks: Max fail delay admin notification

Moodle introduced a new notification for administrators in 4.4.

If any scheduled tasks fail to run in the LMS, an email will be sent to Administrators.

You may notice these two plugins flagging these emails:

1. local_intellicart\task\deletesessionafterperiod_task
   This is due to an error with the plugin not being compatible with Postgres. This can be disabled without any negative impact to your site while IntelliBoard resolve the issue.
2. local_o365\task\cohortsync
   This plugin automatically runs and checks, regardless of whether you have set up Office 365 sync, and will cause an error if it isn't configured. If you are not using Office 365, please disable the plugin to avoid the reminders.
   
   These tasks can be accessed via Site Administration > Server > Tasks > Scheduled Tasks
